Fire Emblem: Shin Ankokuryuu to Hikari no Ken is one of those DS gems that never made it West, which is a shame because it’s got that classic Fire Emblem feel—grid-based battles, permadeath, and a story that actually makes you care when someone dies. The maps are tight, the weapon triangle still matters, and the new class-switching mechanic keeps you tweaking your squad way longer than you’d expect.
First 10 minutes? You’re thrown into a fight with some bandits, figuring out how to position your archer so she doesn’t get wrecked by axes, while your cavalier rushes in to clean up. The sprites are crisp, the animations quick, and yeah, you’ll probably reset when your healer gets crit-killed by a 3% hit chance. Classic Fire Emblem pain.
If you’ve played Shadow Dragon and wanted more, this is basically that but with a few extra layers of polish. Just don’t get too attached to anyone.
