Super Mario 64 DS is basically the N64 classic but with a few extra tricks up its sleeve. You still run around Peach’s castle collecting stars, but now you can switch between Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi—each with their own quirks. Luigi’s floaty jumps are weirdly satisfying, and Yoshi’s tongue attack is just fun to mess around with.
The touchscreen controls take some getting used to (I still fumble with the virtual D-pad sometimes), but the mini-games make great use of the stylus. Also, the graphics got a nice little polish—everything’s a bit sharper, and the DS screen somehow makes Bob-omb Battlefield feel cozier.
It’s still the same chaotic, charming platformer, just now you can lose hours to it on a bus ride.
