Mario Kart DS is the one that made me fall in love with handheld racing. You start off picking your favorite character—I always went with Yoshi, no regrets—and then it’s straight into the chaos. The tracks are a mix of classics and new ones, and drifting around corners feels way smoother than you’d expect from a tiny screen.
What really hooked me was the multiplayer. You could race against friends with just one cartridge, which was insane at the time. Nothing like hitting someone with a blue shell right before the finish line and hearing the groans from across the room. The single-player cups get brutal later on, especially when the AI decides it’s time to gang up on you.
It’s still one of the best Mario Kart games, even after all these years.
