Oh man, TMNT III on Game Boy was such a weird little gem. It looks like a standard platformer at first—you pick one turtle (I always went with Leo) and start jumping through sewers smashing foot soldiers. But then it slowly turns into this weird Metroidvania thing where you have to rescue the other turtles to unlock their abilities.
The level design's surprisingly clever for a Game Boy game. You'll hit dead ends where only Donnie can break through walls with his staff, or spots where Mikey's nunchuks let you swing across gaps. The controls feel a bit stiff now, but back in '93? Pure magic when you finally got all four turtles swapping on the fly.
Also, the European version's called "Hero Turtles" because ninjas were apparently too violent for UK kids. That always cracks me up.
