So, this is basically Pokémon Red, but someone went and gave it a full color makeover—like the way the later Game Boy Color Pokémon games looked. It’s still the same classic Kanto adventure, just way less green. You start off picking between Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur (always a tough call), and then it’s the same old grind of battling trainers and catching ‘em all, except now Viridian Forest actually looks like a forest instead of a blob of pixels.

Weirdly, seeing everything in color makes it feel a little fresher, even though it’s the exact same game. The sprites pop more, and battles don’t look as muddy. If you’ve played the original a million times, this might be worth a replay just for the novelty. Still no running shoes, though—some things never change.
