Okay, so Sword of Hope on the Game Boy is one of those RPGs that feels like a weird mix of dungeon crawler and point-and-click adventure. You start off with this little knight dude—no character creation, just straight into it—and the first thing you do is wander through these maze-like forests and caves, bumping into monsters every few steps.
The combat’s turn-based, but with a twist: you pick from these little illustrated action cards (attack, magic, item, etc.), and timing matters. I remember getting wrecked by the first boss because I kept spamming attack instead of healing. Classic rookie mistake.
What’s cool is the puzzles—some are simple "find the key" stuff, but others make you actually think, like rearranging symbols or deciphering weird in-game riddles. The pixel art’s charming in that early Game Boy way, all chunky and moody, and the music’s got that nostalgic bleep-bloop vibe.
It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but there’s something satisfying about slowly piecing together the story while grinding through random encounters. Just don’t expect a fast-paced hack-and-slash—this one’s more about patience and exploration.
