Okay, so Rings of Power on the Genesis is one of those weird, ambitious RPGs that feels like it was made by people who really wanted to cram a whole D&D campaign onto a cartridge. You start off picking this oddball party of characters—like, do you go with the warrior who hits hard but moves like a tank, or the rogue who dodges everything but folds if a goblin sneezes on him? No right answers, just vibes.
The dungeons are these sprawling, maze-like things where you’re constantly bumping into walls trying to find hidden switches. Combat’s turn-based but weirdly tense—enemies hit hard, and you’ll absolutely panic the first time your healer gets one-shotted by a random skeleton. The magic system’s got this cool risk-reward thing where spells can backfire if you push them too far. Mess around and your fireball might singe your own eyebrows off.
It’s janky in that very 90s way (good luck figuring out some puzzles without a guide), but there’s something charming about how much it tries to do. If you’re into old-school RPGs that don’t hold your hand, this one’s a time capsule worth cracking open.
