Superman came out for the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive, in 1992, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of early 90s games trying to bring comic book heroes to the 16-bit screen. You saw a lot of these attempts, and they had a certain look and feel that was very much of that console generation.

You control Superman through side scrolling levels set in Metropolis. Your main goal is to stop Lex Luthor's latest scheme, which involves rescuing hostages and dismantling bombs before a timer runs out. Your signature abilities are flight and a selection of super powers, like heat vision and super breath, which you use to fight robots and other enemies. The game is structured with exploration, but the constant time pressure makes it feel urgent and often quite difficult. Navigating the city, managing your energy, and figuring out where to go next creates a specific kind of challenge. It feels like a race against the clock where you are never quite as powerful as you expect to be.
