Monstania on SNES is one of those weird little RPGs that somehow sticks with you. At first glance, it looks like a standard fantasy adventure—until you realize half your party is made up of monsters you’ve recruited, and they’ve got way more personality than your actual hero. The battles are turn-based but with this odd grid system where positioning actually matters—mess up and your healer gets swarmed before they can cast a spell.
The pixel art’s got this rough charm to it, especially the monster designs. Some look ridiculous (there’s a walking mushroom with a grumpy face), but they grow on you. And the music? Weirdly catchy synth tracks that shouldn’t work but totally do. It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but there’s something about the way it mixes strategy and silliness that makes it hard to put down. Just don’t get too attached to your slime buddy—permadeath is a thing here.
