Last Legion UX is one of those N64 hidden gems that never made it outside Japan, and honestly? It’s a shame. You start off piloting these clunky mechs, thinking it’s just another action game—until the first mission throws a curveball and forces you to actually think about positioning, unit types, and terrain. The controls take a minute to get used to (that N64 stick wasn’t made for precision), but once it clicks, you’re juggling between blasting enemies and managing your squad’s energy levels like some kind of stressed-out robot babysitter.
The story’s all in Japanese, but the mission briefings have enough visual cues that you can piece together the gist—something about warring factions and a rogue AI, classic mech drama. What really sticks with me are the boss fights, where you’re scrambling to adapt your strategy mid-battle because that towering enemy mech just decided to ignore cover and charge straight at you. Not every idea lands perfectly (the camera angles can be brutal), but when it works, it feels like a scrappier, more chaotic cousin of Front Mission.
If you’re into mech games and don’t mind some trial-and-error, this one’s worth dusting off the ol’ N64 for.
