Paper Mario on the N64 is one of those games that just sticks with you. The whole world looks like it’s made of construction paper and cardboard, but somehow that makes it even more charming—like playing through a pop-up book where Bowser’s actually kidnapped Peach (again).
Combat’s turn-based but way more interactive than you’d expect. You time button presses for extra damage or blocks, and the partners you recruit (a bomb-omb with existential dread, a sassy koopa kid) all have their own weird little quirks. First time I played, I got stuck for way too long figuring out how to cross a gap until I realized, oh right, I can literally fold into a paper airplane.
It’s got that classic Mario humor, too—like when you meet a shy guy who’s just really bad at being evil. Still holds up if you’re into RPGs that don’t take themselves too seriously.
