Paper Mario on the N64 is one of those games that just sticks with you. The whole paper aesthetic isn’t just a gimmick—it actually gives the world this weirdly charming, storybook feel. You’re still rescuing Peach (of course), but the way battles work is way more strategic than your usual Mario game. Turn-based fights, but with timed button presses to boost attacks or block damage—keeps you on your toes.
What really makes it special are the partners you pick up along the way. A bomb-omb with commitment issues, a shy little star kid—each one changes how you approach fights and puzzles. And the writing? Surprisingly funny. Like, Bowser’s got this ridiculous ego, and the NPCs have way more personality than you’d expect from a Mario RPG.
It’s aged way better than most N64 games, too. If you missed it back in the day, it’s still a blast to play now.
