Man, Flashback – The Quest For Identity on the Sega Genesis still holds up. You start as Conrad, literally falling out of the sky with zero memory—just a weird holographic message and some goons already trying to kill you. The rotoscoped animations give it this weirdly smooth, almost dreamlike feel compared to other 16-bit games.
First thing you notice? The controls take a second to get used to—running feels weighty, and Conrad actually stumbles if you stop too fast. But once it clicks, you’re sneaking past security drones, flipping switches, and piecing together why everyone wants you dead. The jungle level’s still my favorite—those vine swings are janky in the best way.
It’s got that old-school difficulty where you’ll die a lot, but the checkpoints are fair. And that soundtrack? Pure moody synth that somehow makes failing a jump five times in a row feel dramatic. If you missed this one back in the day, it’s like Blade Runner meets Prince of Persia with a side of existential crisis.
