Contra 3 on SNES is where the series really flexed its muscles. The jump from NES to Super Nintendo wasn’t just about prettier explosions—suddenly you’re swinging from poles like some kind of alien-blasting Tarzan, climbing walls, and even hijacking tanks mid-level. The first time I grabbed onto one of those overhead bars, I totally faceplanted into a swarm of enemies, but once you get the timing down, it feels awesome.
They threw in these wild Mode 7 stages where you’re riding missiles or speeding through city streets on a motorcycle, dodging fire from all sides. And thank god they ditched the rapid-fire button mashing—starting with assault rifles right out the gate makes those early chaotic moments way less punishing. Though if you get cocky with the spin-jump attack (where you unleash bullets in every direction), one hit costs you both guns. Learned that the hard way.
It’s still Contra—brutal, loud, and full of “how was I supposed to dodge that?!” moments—but with way more toys to play with.
