Konami released Contra: The Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis in 1994. You control one of four specialized soldiers, each with a unique primary weapon, and fight through urban and industrial zones overrun by a rogue military force. Your main objective is to stop a terrorist plot, but the path you take can branch based on decisions made during brief dialogue scenes, leading to different levels and endings. Signature mechanics include collecting power-ups to change your weapon on the fly and a life bar that allows you to survive a few hits instead of dying in one shot. The pacing is relentless, with constant enemy fire and screen-filling bosses, and the difficulty is notoriously high, demanding quick reflexes and memorization. Playing it feels like a frantic, all-out assault where every second counts.
