Contra Force came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed and published by Konami. You control one of three special operatives, switching between them to fight through urban environments. Your main goal is to stop a terrorist organization by clearing areas screen by screen. The signature mechanics include character swapping, which lets you use different weapons and abilities on the fly, and the ability to find and carry multiple special weapons like flamethrowers and homing missiles. The pacing is deliberate, more about clearing rooms than constant forward momentum, and the difficulty is substantial, demanding careful positioning and ammo management. Playing it feels like a tactical, sometimes claustrophobic shootout where every enemy encounter requires your full attention.
