I first played Gryzor, known as Contra in some regions, on the Nintendo Entertainment System after Konami released it in 1987. It was a time when side scrolling action games were common, and this one immediately stood out for its intensity. You control one of two commandos, Bill or Lance, tasked with stopping an alien entity called Red Falcon.

You run, jump, and shoot your way through eight stages, moving from left to right while enemies pour in from all directions. The main objective is to survive to the end and destroy the alien heart. Key mechanics include picking up power ups that change your weapon, like the rapid fire Spread Gun or the piercing Laser. You also have to navigate environmental hazards, such as falling into pits, and memorize enemy patterns. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is punishing, often requiring multiple continues. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic test of your reflexes and memory.
