Toe Jam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron is one of those games that just oozes personality from the first second. You start off on their home planet, and immediately some goofy human tourists are causing chaos everywhere—knocking over plants, screaming into microphones, just being total menaces. Your job? Round 'em up and rocket them back to Earth.
The shift from the first game’s roguelike style to a side-scrolling platformer threw me at first, but it works. You’ve got these weird little tools to trap humans, like a net or a hypnotizing yo-yo, and the controls feel surprisingly smooth once you get the hang of it. Also, the soundtrack? Pure funk. Like, if Sega Genesis could grow a afro and start grooving, this would be the result.
Little details make it—like when you eat a random pie and some dude in the background yells “AWESOME!” for no reason. Or how TJ and Earl just casually breakdance between levels. It’s ridiculous in the best way. The game doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither should you.
If you’re into weird, colorful platformers with more charm than most modern games, this one’s a blast. Just don’t blame me when you start randomly saying “FUNKOTRON” in casual conversation.
