Super Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back on SNES is one of those games that makes you feel like you’re actually in the movie—except you’ll probably die a lot more than Luke or Han ever did. Right from the start, you’re thrown into Hoth’s freezing wasteland, blasting snowtroopers and dodging AT-AT fire while that iconic Imperial March blares in the background. The pixel art somehow makes Tauntauns look cool, and the controls are just tight enough that when you mess up (and you will), it’s definitely your fault.
Switching between characters keeps things interesting—Luke’s lightsaber feels powerful but slow, Han’s blaster is quick but weak, and Chewie… well, Chewie’s just fun to play as. The levels get brutal fast, especially the asteroid field and Dagobah’s weird Force-training puzzles. And yeah, the music? Perfect. They nailed the John Williams vibe without a single orchestral sample.
It’s not a flawless port—some hitboxes are janky, and the difficulty spikes will test your patience—but for a 16-bit Star Wars game, it’s about as good as it gets. Just don’t throw your controller when you get to the boss fights.
