Star Control on the Genesis is one of those games that feels way bigger than it has any right to be. You start off just flying between stars, but before long you're negotiating with weird alien diplomats who all have their own agendas—some friendly, some... not so much. The ship combat is surprisingly deep too, with different vessels handling like they actually have weight to them.
What really stuck with me were the alien designs. The Spathi are these paranoid little guys who freak out if you get too close, while the Ur-Quan are just terrifying when they roll up in their dreadnoughts. And yeah, the diplomacy stuff actually matters—pick the wrong dialogue option and suddenly you've got a fleet chasing you across three systems.
It's janky in that classic early '90s way, but there's nothing else quite like it. Still holds up if you can handle the old-school interface.
