Rampart came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, a conversion of the arcade game by Atari Games. It was a different kind of strategy title for the console, arriving amidst a sea of platformers and RPGs. The game presented a simple but engaging premise that focused on castle defense and territorial control.

You control a cursor to place Tetris-like castle wall pieces onto a grid, enclosing territories to claim them. After building your fortress, a cannon placement phase begins, where you strategically set guns inside your walls. The action then shifts to a shooting phase, where you manually aim and fire these cannons at an invading fleet of enemy ships. The core loop is this rapid cycle: build your walls quickly, place your cannons, and then destroy as many ships as you can before the timer runs out and the cycle repeats. The game moves at a brisk pace, and a single breach in your walls can lead to a swift defeat. Successfully defending your castle and then expanding its borders in the next round provides a tense and satisfying feeling of rebuilding against the odds.
