Landstalker is one of those Genesis gems that feels like a mix of Zelda and an isometric platformer—except you’ll probably fall off cliffs way more often. You play as Nigel, a cocky treasure hunter who jumps (sometimes awkwardly) around Mercator Island, slashing monsters and getting stuck on puzzles that make you stop and actually think.
The world’s packed with little secrets—hidden switches, fake walls, NPCs who give you just enough cryptic hints to be useful. Combat’s simple but satisfying, though the camera angles can mess with your depth perception. And yeah, the platforming’s janky in that old-school way where you’ll swear the game’s cheating until you nail the timing.
It’s got charm, though. The music’s great, the dialogue’s surprisingly fun, and there’s something weirdly addictive about hunting down every last treasure. Just don’t be surprised if you get lost for an hour trying to figure out how to reach that one chest.
