I first played Final Fantasy IV Advance on my Game Boy Advance back in 2005. It was a re-release of a much older Super Nintendo game, brought over by Square Enix to live in your pocket. For a lot of us, this was the version that made a classic from a previous console generation accessible, letting you dive into its world during a car trip or between classes.

You control Cecil, a dark knight wrestling with his past, and you lead a rotating cast of characters, each with unique abilities. Your main goal is to stop a sorcerer from destroying the world, which sends you across the map, into towns for clues, and through multi-level dungeons filled with traps and monsters. The combat uses the Active Time Battle system, where you don't take turns; a gauge fills for each character, and you act as soon as it's full, which keeps the fights feeling urgent. The game has a brisk pace, and some of the boss fights demand real strategy, punishing you if you're not prepared. Exploring each new screen and managing your party's specific skills, like a dragoon's jump or a summoner's magical beasts, makes the whole journey feel like a substantial, personal adventure.
