About Super Mario Bros.
I first played Super Mario Bros. on the Game Boy Advance, a version Nintendo released in the early 2000s. It was part of the Classic NES Series, bringing the original 1985 game to a handheld. This was a time when having these old console games in your pocket felt new, a direct link to the earlier days of gaming without needing the original hardware.
You control Mario, or Luigi in two-player mode, running and jumping through the Mushroom Kingdom. The main goal is straightforward: travel from the left side of the screen to the right, defeat or avoid enemies like Goombas and Koopas, and reach the flagpole at the end of each level. Key mechanics include breaking bricks and question blocks, often to collect coins or power-ups like the Super Mushroom that makes you grow larger. You also navigate the levels screen by screen, with some pipes leading to hidden areas or warp zones that let you skip ahead. The pacing is quick, demanding precise jumps, especially in later worlds where the difficulty spikes with tricky platforming and faster enemies. Playing it feels like a constant, focused test of timing and memory.
