About Azure Dreams (europe) (en,fr,de)
Azure Dreams for the Game Boy Color came out in 2000, published by Konami. It was part of that era where handheld RPGs were experimenting with mixing genres, offering a different kind of adventure from the typical linear quest.
You control a boy named Koh, whose main goal is to climb a monster-infested tower that looms over his town. The core loop involves entering the tower, exploring it floor by randomized floor, and trying to get as high as you can before being forced to retreat. You fight monsters in turn-based combat, using a sword or magic, and the key twist is that if you die, you lose all your items and levels, starting from the bottom again on your next attempt. However, you can bring back monster eggs to hatch as familiars, and any gold or specific key items you find can be used to permanently upgrade the town, which gives a real sense of progress despite the dungeon's harshness. The pacing is deliberate, with each climb feeling like a fresh risk, and the permanent town development provides a compelling reason to keep diving back in. It creates a cycle of tense exploration and satisfying long-term growth that is difficult to put down.
