Pokémon Yellow is basically the Game Boy Color’s love letter to the anime—you start with Pikachu following you around like Ash’s does, and it even refuses to stay in its Pokéball. The sprites got a little upgrade from Red and Blue, and you’ll run into Team Rocket’s Jessie and James, which is a nice touch if you grew up watching the show.
It’s still the same Kanto adventure, but with some tweaks—like being able to get all three starters if you play your cards right. The battles feel a bit smoother, and Pikachu’s mood changes based on how you treat it (ignore it too much and it’ll start giving you the cold shoulder). Definitely the definitive way to play Gen 1 if you ask me.
