Man, Toukon Road 2 on the N64 is one of those Japanese wrestling gems that never made it West—which is a shame, because it’s way more fun than most of the grapplers we got. You start off picking from these beefy, exaggerated wrestlers (some look like they stepped out of an 80s anime), and the controls feel surprisingly smooth for an N64 fighter. The grappling actually requires timing instead of button mashing, and there’s something hilarious about slamming someone so hard the ring shakes like a trampoline.
What really hooked me was the customization—you can tweak your wrestler’s moveset, which sounds minor until you realize half the roster has these absurd, physics-defying suplexes. Matches get chaotic fast, especially in four-player mode where someone always ends up getting tossed out of the ring in slow motion. It’s not the prettiest game by today’s standards, but the over-the-top energy makes up for it. If you’ve ever wanted to suplex a guy through a table while wearing neon tights, this is your game.
