Toe Jam & Earl is one of those weird, wonderful Genesis games that just oozes personality. You play as two goofy alien rappers stranded on Earth—which, to them, is this bizarre place full of random dangers like angry nerds, giant hamsters, and sentient mailboxes. The whole thing plays like a roguelike before roguelikes were even a thing, with procedurally generated levels where you hunt for pieces of your wrecked spaceship.
The controls take a second to get used to (Earl’s floaty jumps still mess me up sometimes), but once it clicks, it’s pure chaos. You’ll open presents that might give you rocket skates or turn you invisible—or, y’know, summon a tornado that flings you halfway across the map. Co-op’s where it really shines, though. Nothing beats watching your friend panic as they get chased by a hula girl or trying to coordinate who gets the last slice of cake for health.
It’s janky, unpredictable, and somehow still one of the most charming games on the system. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission.
