Tengai Makyou Zero on SNES is one of those RPGs that feels like stumbling into a weird, wonderful anime you can’t stop watching. You start off as this exiled samurai—cool enough—but then the game throws talking dogs, floating islands, and a villain who looks like he raided a kabuki theater’s costume department. The battles are classic turn-based stuff, but the spells have these ridiculous names and animations that make even grinding kinda fun.
What really sticks with me is how unapologetically Japanese it is—folklore references everywhere, puns that probably murdered the localizers, and towns where you’ll haggle with a tanuki in a kimono. The overworld theme still randomly gets stuck in my head, too. It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but it’s got more charm than half the stuff on the SNES. Just don’t expect the translation to hold your hand.
If you’ve ever wanted to fight a giant radish with a katana, this is your game.
