Shadow Man on N64 is one of those weird, moody late-90s gems that sticks with you. You play as Mike LeRoi, a voodoo-powered antihero who can hop between the land of the living and the dead—which is handy, because the actual living world feels way creepier than the afterlife here. The first thing you’ll notice is how oppressive the atmosphere is: grainy textures, distant screams, and this unsettling hum in the background that makes every corner feel dangerous.
Combat’s a bit clunky by today’s standards (hello, N64 tank controls), but there’s something satisfying about blasting demons with a shotgun while navigating these labyrinthine levels. Half the time I got lost in the sprawling maps, but stumbling onto some hidden voodoo doll or cryptic clue made it worth it. And that soundtrack? Pure nightmare fuel in the best way—like someone recorded a horror movie score in a cathedral basement.
It’s janky, sure, but there’s nothing else quite like it. If you can handle the dated controls, it’s a trip worth taking.
