Rushing Beat Shura is one of those SNES beat 'em ups that somehow flew under the radar back in the day, which is a shame because it's got this weird, rough charm to it. You pick from three fighters—I always went with the guy who looks like a biker—and just start wrecking dudes in streets, factories, and weirdly empty amusement parks.
The controls are stiff at first (this was 1992, after all), but once you get used to the rhythm of punching, grabbing, and tossing enemies into the background, it clicks. The music’s got this grungy synth thing going on that somehow fits perfectly when you're kneeing some goon in the gut for the tenth time. And yeah, the graphics are bright and messy in that way only early SNES games could be—like someone spilled neon paint over a comic book.
It’s not as polished as Final Fight or Turtles in Time, but there’s something about the janky combo system and how enemies just keep swarming you that makes it weirdly addictive. Bring a friend if you can—everything’s better with a second player yelling at the screen when you both get jumped by a surprise boss.
Definitely one for the "hidden gem" crowd who don’t mind a little clunkiness with their nostalgia.
