Okamiden is like a pocket-sized version of Okami, but don’t let that fool you—it’s got its own charm. You play as Chibiterasu, this adorable little wolf pup who’s basically a baby sun god. The whole thing feels like a watercolor painting come to life, and the touch controls actually work surprisingly well for drawing brush strokes to solve puzzles or smack enemies around.
At first, I wasn’t sure how the DS would handle the brush mechanics, but swiping the screen to slash through obstacles or make trees bloom is weirdly satisfying. Some of the dungeons get pretty clever with it, and there’s this one boss fight where you have to quickly sketch bridges mid-battle that still sticks with me. It’s not as sprawling as the original, but the shorter chapters make it perfect for handheld play.
If you miss Okami’s style or just want a DS game that actually uses the touch screen for something cool, this one’s a solid pick. Just be ready for a lot of puns—the dialogue doesn’t hold back.
