Mario Golf 64 is one of those rare sports games where you don’t need to care about golf to have a blast. You pick from Mario, Luigi, Peach, or even Wario (who, by the way, has the most ridiculous swing animation), and suddenly you’re whacking balls across these bright, cartoony courses full of pipes, warp zones, and the occasional Chain Chomp hazard.
The controls are simple—hold the button to power up, release to swing—but there’s a surprising amount of strategy in judging wind, slopes, and which club to use. I remember spending way too long trying to master the backspin trick shots, only to watch Yoshi casually outdrive me with a perfect shot.
It’s got a full tournament mode, but honestly, the real fun is in the multiplayer. Nothing beats watching your friend’s ball ricochet off a tree because they got cocky with a power shot. The courses start easy, but by the time you hit the later ones, you’ll be cursing those sneaky sand traps.
It’s still one of the best golf games Nintendo ever made, and that’s coming from someone who usually skips sports titles.
