Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is one of those DS gems that flew under the radar but totally nails that old-school JRPG feel. You start off as this kid Brandt in a cozy little kingdom—until, of course, everything goes sideways and you’re suddenly thrown into a world-saving quest with three other unlucky heroes. The art style’s got this warm, storybook look to it, which is a nice change from the usual hyper-detailed fantasy stuff.
Combat’s turn-based but with a twist—you’ve got this AP system where every action costs points, so you can’t just spam attacks. And the job system? Way more flexible than it seems at first. I remember stubbornly sticking with the Black Mage crown for way too long before realizing how busted some of the hybrid setups could be. Oh, and the multiplayer’s actually fun if you can find someone else with a copy—teaming up for boss fights feels like a proper old-school co-op session.
It’s not perfect (the inventory system’s kinda janky), but if you miss the days when RPGs were more about charm than grinding for loot, this one’s a solid pick. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—those boss fights will wreck you if you’re not paying attention.
