Doom 64 is the weird, moody cousin of the original Doom games—darker, creepier, and way more atmospheric. You’re still blasting demons, sure, but the N64’s hardware gives everything this eerie, almost foggy look that makes the levels feel way more oppressive. The soundtrack’s all ambient dread instead of heavy metal, which somehow makes chainsawing an imp in half even more unsettling.
First 10 minutes? You’re dropped into these dim corridors with nothing but a pistol, hearing distant growls, and suddenly a pinkie demon charges out of the shadows. The weapons feel chunkier than the PC versions—the shotgun’s got this satisfying thump to it. And yeah, the Unmaker’s still here if you hunt down the upgrades, turning you into a laser-spewing nightmare for anything that moves.
It’s not just nostalgia bait, either. The level design’s got some nasty surprises, like traps that’ll make you jump or puzzles that’ll have you backtracking (in a good way). If you missed this one back in the day, it’s worth digging up—just maybe play with the lights on.
