About Clay Fighter 64
Clay Fighter 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, published by Interplay Entertainment. It was part of that wave of early 3D fighting games on the system, trying to carve out its own space with a distinct visual style. The game arrived when developers were still figuring out how to translate 2D brawlers into a three-dimensional space.
You control one of several fighters made of clay, like the snowman Blob or the sumo wrestler Sumo Santa, and you battle opponents in enclosed 3D arenas. The main objective is to deplete your rival's health bar using a combination of basic attacks, special moves, and throws. Signature mechanics include the ability to pick up and throw various objects that appear in the stage, and performing exaggerated, often silly, finishing moves to end a match. The pacing is slower than many 2D fighters of the time, and the controls can feel a bit stiff, which adds to the challenge. Playing it feels like a clumsy but earnest experiment in bringing a handmade aesthetic to a polygonal brawl.
