Bomberman Hero on N64 is one of those weird spin-offs that actually works. Instead of the usual grid-based mayhem, you're running and jumping through full 3D levels—which sounds janky, but somehow the controls feel just right after a few minutes. The first level throws you into this neon city where you're bouncing bombs off walls to hit enemies hiding behind cover, and yeah, you'll definitely blow yourself up a couple times figuring out the timing.
What surprised me was how much it leans into adventure elements. There are keys to find, hidden paths, and even some light platforming between bomb fights. The music's got this cheesy late-90s electronic vibe that somehow makes planting bombs under giant robot crabs feel even more ridiculous. Not quite what you'd expect from a Bomberman game, but in a good way.
If you played the classic Bomberman games and thought "what if this had worse camera angles but way more personality?", here's your answer.
