Aretha III is one of those Game Boy RPGs that feels like it got lost in time—in a good way. You start off in this little pixelated town, picking your party from a weirdly specific lineup (why are there three different mages but only one warrior?). The turn-based battles are simple at first, but once you hit the second dungeon, you realize how much those tiny stat boosts actually matter.
The story’s got that classic "chosen one" vibe, but there’s something oddly charming about how seriously it takes itself. Like, yes, the fate of the world hinges on whether you remember to buy enough healing herbs before leaving town. And the music? Surprisingly catchy for a Game Boy soundtrack—I still hum the overworld theme sometimes.
If you’ve played the first two, you’ll spot some returning faces, but it’s easy enough to jump into blind. Just don’t expect any hand-holding; that first boss will wreck you if you didn’t grind a little. It’s the kind of game where you lose an hour just wandering into random caves to see what’s inside.
