About Top Rank Tennis
Top Rank Tennis, released for the original Game Boy in 1990, was developed by Pax Softonica and published by Tonkin House. It arrived early in the handheld's life, a time when portable sports simulations were still finding their footing. The game presents a straightforward take on tennis, built for quick sessions rather than deep simulation.
You control a single tennis player from a side view of the court, moving them to hit forehands and backhands. The main objective is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets. Two mechanics define the play: a power meter you charge for stronger shots, and the ability to apply topspin or slice to alter the ball's trajectory. Matches move at a brisk pace, and the computer opponents offer a decent challenge, especially as you progress. It feels satisfying to time a charged shot perfectly and watch it land just inside the baseline.
