About Tecmo Bowl
Tecmo Bowl on the Game Boy came out in 1991 from Tecmo, the same company that made the NES original. This was a time when getting a recognizable sports game on a handheld felt like a small miracle, a pocket-sized version of something you usually played on the big screen. It was a straightforward attempt to translate the arcade football experience to the monochrome portable.
You control a team of football players, choosing a play from a limited selection and then trying to move the ball downfield. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by getting touchdowns. Signature mechanics include the pre-snap play selection, where you pick a run or pass, and then the execution, where you directly control the quarterback or ball carrier. The game scrolls screen by screen as you advance, and the difficulty comes from the defense quickly closing in on your player. It feels like a quick, chaotic scramble every time you snap the ball.
