Super Mario RPG on SNES is one of those weird, wonderful gems that shouldn’t work but totally does. You start off with the usual "Bowser kidnaps Peach" setup, but then a giant sword crashes into his castle, and suddenly you’ve got Mario teaming up with his archnemesis to fight robot clowns. Yeah, it gets weird.
The combat’s simple turn-based stuff, but with timed button presses to boost attacks or block—kinda like Paper Mario before Paper Mario existed. And the party? Peach actually slaps enemies with a frying pan, and Bowser just… chomps people. No fire breath, just raw bite force. Classic.
What really sticks with me are the little things: hidden treasure chests that taunt you, Toads with existential crises, and that one boss battle where you fight an entire orchestra. It’s silly, but in that way where you catch yourself grinning at the dialogue. Also, the soundtrack? Still slaps. You’ll hum the battle theme for days.
If you missed this back in the ‘90s, it’s worth digging up—it’s Mario, but with all the weirdness dialed up to 11.
