Speedball 2 on Game Boy is one of those games that looks simple at first—just a futuristic sports thing, right?—but then you start playing and realize it’s basically hockey mixed with a bar fight. The controls are tight, and within minutes you’re slamming opponents into walls, banking shots off the arena’s weird bounce pads, and desperately scrambling to grab the ball before the other team scores.

The AI isn’t messing around, either. If you just charge in swinging, you’ll get wrecked. I learned that the hard way. There’s a weirdly satisfying rhythm to it once you get the hang of passing and timing your tackles. And the pixel art? Still holds up, especially the little details like the way players stagger after a hit.

It’s the kind of game where you lose track of time because “just one more match” turns into five. The Game Boy version doesn’t have the flash of the console editions, but it’s surprisingly deep for a handheld port. You’ll either love it or throw your Game Boy across the room—no in-between.
