Ragnacenty is one of those Genesis games that slipped under the radar back in the day, but man, it’s got this weird charm. You start off in some gloomy castle—typical fantasy stuff—but then the music kicks in, and suddenly you’re fully invested in this pixelated world. The controls are a little stiff at first (it is a 16-bit era action RPG), but once you get used to swinging your sword and dodging those floating skull enemies, it clicks.
What really got me was the dungeon layouts. They’re not just mazes—there’s actual puzzles, like pressure plates and hidden switches, and the game doesn’t hold your hand. I died a lot figuring out how to not get crushed by rolling boulders. The sprite work’s surprisingly detailed too, especially the boss designs. That three-headed dragon? Still looks cool.
If you’re into retro games that don’t spoon-feed you, this one’s worth digging up. Just maybe keep a walkthrough handy for the weird key-fetching side quests.
