About Othello
Othello came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of many straightforward adaptations of classic board games that found a home on the NES, offering a digital version of the familiar black and white disc flipping game. This was a time when having a portable opponent built into your console was a genuine novelty, and Othello delivered exactly that.
You control a cursor to place your colored discs on the 8x8 grid, aiming to end the game with more of your color showing than your opponent's. The core mechanic is flipping your opponent's discs by trapping them between your new piece and another one of your own already on the board. You must constantly look for these capture opportunities while also blocking your opponent from doing the same, which makes every move a careful calculation. The computer opponent can be surprisingly sharp, especially on higher difficulty settings, forcing you to plan several moves ahead. It feels like a quiet, methodical battle of wits played out on a small, green grid.
