Operation WinBack on N64 was way ahead of its time—basically Gears of War before Gears of War existed. You play as this covert ops guy trying to stop terrorists from hijacking a satellite weapon, and the whole thing feels like a cheesy but awesome 90s action movie. The cover system is the real star here—ducking behind crates, blind-firing around corners—it actually makes you think instead of just running in guns blazing.
First mission drops you right into a military base at night, and I remember fumbling with the controls at first (N64 controllers weren’t exactly precision tools). But once you get the hang of peeking out from cover to pick off enemies, it clicks. The levels are surprisingly varied too—one minute you’re sneaking through air vents, the next you’re in a full-on shootout in some underground lab. Just don’t expect deep storytelling—the dialogue is hilariously stiff, but that’s part of the charm.
Still holds up if you’re into retro shooters with a tactical twist.
