Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero on N64 is… well, it’s a weird one. Starts off feeling like a side-scrolling beat ‘em up, but then you realize there’s all these awkward jumps and weirdly placed enemies that’ll knock you into pits. Classic Midway jank, honestly.
You play as Sub-Zero before he was just another fighter in the roster—back when he was still doing assassin work for the Lin Kuei. The story’s actually kinda cool if you’re into MK lore, with Quan Chi showing up and everything going sideways. Combat’s clunky by today’s standards, but nailing that freeze-and-uppercut combo still feels satisfying when it works.
Biggest surprise? The game’s full of these bizarre puzzle sections where you’re pushing blocks or avoiding traps. Not what you’d expect from a Mortal Kombat spinoff, but it keeps things from getting too repetitive. Just don’t expect it to play like the mainline games.
If you’re a hardcore MK fan or just love late ‘90s experimental action games, it’s worth a look—just maybe watch a playthrough first so you know what you’re getting into.
