Majora's Mask came out in 2000 for the Nintendo 64, developed and published by Nintendo. It arrived a couple of years after Ocarina of Time on the same console, building on that foundation while taking the series in a much darker and more personal direction.
You control Link, tasked with preventing the moon from crashing into the world of Termina in just three days. The central mechanic is a 72-hour cycle you repeatedly live through, using the Ocarina of Time to reset or slow the clock. You explore the world not just screen by screen, but also by collecting and using transformation masks that turn you into a Deku Scrub, a Goron, or a Zora, each with unique abilities for solving puzzles and navigating dungeons. The game's pacing is deliberate, even tense, as you manage your time to help the townspeople and complete dungeons before the cycle resets. It feels like a race against a clock where you are the only one who remembers what is coming.
