King of the Monsters is basically Godzilla meets pro wrestling, but with way more pixelated destruction. You pick one of six giant monsters—my go-to was always the four-armed Geon, but the radioactive-looking Poison Ghost had some nasty moves—and then just wreck entire cities while fighting another kaiju.
The first time I played, I accidentally backhanded a skyscraper into my opponent’s face and immediately fell in love. The controls are simple (grab, punch, atomic breath), but there’s something weirdly satisfying about suplexing a giant lizard through a power plant. And yeah, the buildings actually crumble when you slam someone into them—none of that indestructible background nonsense.
It’s a two-player game at heart. My brother and I used to argue over who got to be the flying one (Astro Guy, obviously), and the screen would shake like crazy when both monsters charged at each other. The music’s all crunchy synth beats that sound like a robot wrestling match, which somehow fits perfectly. Just don’t expect deep strategy—this is pure, dumb, smash-everything fun.
Still holds up if you’re into janky 16-bit brawlers where the real winner is whoever knocks over the most buildings.
