Juuouki is one of those Genesis games that feels like it got lost in translation—literally. You start off as this warrior dude (or maybe a demon? Honestly, the manual didn’t explain much) slashing through weird, chunky monsters in a world that looks like someone’s neon dungeon-crawling dream. The controls are stiff at first, but once you get the hang of the sword swings and jumps, it’s weirdly satisfying.
The sprites are huge for a Genesis game, and some of the enemy designs are just bizarre in the best way—think floating eyeballs with legs and armored knights that explode into meat chunks. It’s got that classic "figure it out as you go" vibe where you’ll probably die a few times just learning what the power-ups even do. Not gonna lie, the difficulty spikes hard after the first couple levels, but that’s part of the charm. If you’re into obscure 16-bit action with a side of "what am I even playing," this one’s a trip.
