Joy Mech Fight is one of those weird little Nintendo gems that somehow squeezed way more out of the Famicom than it had any right to. It's a full-on fighting game with 36 robot characters—which was absolutely insane for an 8-bit system in '93. The first time I booted it up, I couldn't believe how fluid the animations were for something running on that old hardware.
It plays like a stripped-down Street Fighter II, but with all the inputs simplified to work with just two buttons. No fireball motions here—everything's either a quick tap or hold-and-release. Takes some getting used to if you're coming from arcade fighters, but it works surprisingly well once you adjust.
Biggest downside? Most of the roster is locked at first, so you'll be grinding through arcade mode to unlock them. Still, there's something charming about how ambitious this was—Nintendo basically built their own fighting game universe with robot designs ranging from "cool samurai" to "literal walking toaster." And yeah, the main character Sukapon totally should've made it into Smash Bros.
If you're into retro fighters or just curious about Nintendo's weird experiments, this one's a fascinating time capsule.
